Community Engagement Unit:
UCPD takes pride in our police department and we are committed to being fully engaged with the diverse Cal community.  The creation of the new Community Engagement Unit gives UCPD the opportunity to interact with our students, staff, faculty and visitors in a new way that brings more transparency and voice to the community.  As part of our efforts,  UCPD officers are creating community outreach opportunities, participating on committees and providing principled policing training to our staff.

On March 8, UCPD officers responded to a report regarding two individuals, one of whom was described as visibly carrying a powerful stun device near Sather Gate, the center of the UC Berkeley campus. Possession of a stun device on campus property is prohibited by law, and UCPD strictly enforces the campus weapon ban to protect the community.

Congrats to UC Berkeley PD K-9 Ofc. Brandon Netz and his partner K-9 Boalt who earned top awards in a recent K-9 trial competition against 30 other explosive and narcotics K-9 teams.  Events like these help our officers train and prepare for realistic scenarios.  Ofc. Netz and K-9 Boalt also took a moment to say "hi" to a student on Sproul Plaza.

Canine Officer Obi, a 14-month-old Springer Spaniel, started work last month as UC Berkeley’s new explosive-detecting dog. Obi was abused as a puppy in Wyoming, before a police dog trainer rescued him and brought him to Berkeley.
