Use of Force Data

UCPD Berkeley is acutely aware it bears no greater responsibility than the appropriate use of reasonable force when necessary and lawful. Our goal is to safely resolve threatening situations through de-escalation whenever possible.

We must acknowledge that within the scope of our public safety and law enforcement duties, not all use of force will be avoidable. To effectively safeguard the University’s mission of teaching, research and service, UCPD Berkeley must be sufficiently trained, equipped and prepared to defend the community from threats and to uphold the law.

When UCPD Berkeley officers do use force, it is documented and reviewed for compliance with law and policy, as well as for opportunities to improve our policies, procedures and capacities.
