Meet Sandi

UC Berkeley Police Department Therapy K9 Program

Facility/Therapy K9 “Sandi” is part of the University of California, Berkeley Police Department’s commitment to wellness, community connection, and compassionate public safety. She comes to us from UC San Diego Police Department where her brother “Diego” also serves the UCSD community.

Sandi provides comfort, emotional support, and positive engagement for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and UCPD personnel. Whether she’s attending a campus event, department presentation, or simply saying hello while out and about, Sandi helps create meaningful connections and brighten people’s day.

Therapy dogs can reduce stress, ease anxiety, and foster trust—making them a valuable resource for wellness and community outreach.

What Sandi Does

Sandi supports the campus community by:

  • Providing comfort during stressful or challenging times

  • Supporting wellness and mental health initiatives

  • Attending community outreach and engagement events

  • Assisting after critical or traumatic incidents

  • Promoting positive interactions with UCPD

Training

Therapy dogs receive specialized training to ensure they can safely and effectively work in diverse environments. Training focuses on:

  • Calm temperament and socialization

  • Obedience and handler responsiveness

  • Emotional support skills

  • Ongoing certification and wellness

Meet Sandi’s Handler

Campus Community Safety Specialist Madrigal is Sandi’s primary handler and caretaker. Together, they support UCPD’s mission of building trust, strengthening relationships, and promoting a safer, more connected campus.

Where to Meet Sandi

Beginning July 2026, Sandi and Humberto will be completing training and preparing for campus engagement.

You may see Sandi at:

  • Campus wellness events

  • Community outreach programs

  • Department presentations

  • Prescheduled meet-and-greets

Because rest and recovery are essential for working dogs, Sandi’s availability may vary.
