SAFETeam Program

The SafeTeam Program (formerly Building Watch) is an application of the neighborhood watch model adapted to a university setting. Each building is a unique “community” with specific concerns and needs. Officers assigned to these buildings work with Building Coordinators, students, staff and faculty to identify problems, and find solutions. The program increases communication between the Police Department and those who regularly work or live on campus property, to facilitate services that are building-specific and appropriate, and to increase resident awareness.

In over 70 campus buildings, SafeTeam Officers will do the following:

  • Make regular visits to participating buildings in order to provide a visible police presence and stay familiar with building users and building issues.

  • Work with Building Coordinators by email to review incidents and crime trends and recommend risk reduction measures.

  • Distribute safety education materials to the building.

  • Coordinate crime prevention presentations and/or informal Q&A sessions for building occupants.

Role of Building Coordinators

UCPD's SAFETeam program is for community policing. Its inception was based on Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) philosophy.

The SAFETeam program is tightly integrated with OEM's Building Coordinator program for emergency response.

Contacting officers

Community members inside campus buildings should first contact their assigned Building Coordinators to make them aware of any problems they are having. Then the Building Coordinator may reach out to their UCPD SAFETeam officer.

To help Building Coordinators connect with officer's we have made an online map with data. Community members with a email may log in to use the GoogleMap.

The program divides the campus into various geographic zones, each assigned with its own dedicated SAFETeam officers. Click on the Officers Assigned layer, then choose "open the data table" to see the badges and emails of the officers assigned to each region. Use the search function to find Team Leaders, or all officers for a Region, or even a specific officer's name and contact info.
