Child Safety Tips

  • Help your child learn the surrounding streets and main roads by name and caution them about taking shortcuts. Make certain that they always stay on main roads and determine some public places they can go to for assistance if they are ever in trouble or lost.
  • Remind your child to always stay with other children and report any unusual or confusing incidents to you.
  • Make certain that there are backup people your child can contact if they need assistance and you are not home.
  • Remind your child to check with you before they go anywhere with friends. This includes accepting rides from neighbors or going into their homes.
  • Remind your child of the safety rules when they are home alone. These include keeping the doors and windows locked; never opening the door for someone they don't know; and check with you before they open the door, even if you are there.
  • Caution your child to never give out personal information to someone who calls on the telephone. Instruct your child to tell the caller that you are not available and to take a message.
  • Let your child know that they should tell a trusted adult if anyone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused in any way.
  • Tell your child that if they see any suspicious activity or individuals, please contact UCPD immediately by dialing 9-1-1 or 642-3333 (from cell phones).
